Flash Catalyst....

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

I can't wait for Catalyst to come out. It loks like a really great product. In preparation fot it, I have already created a sample InDesign file that I will use catalyst to turn into an RIA. Another question that I will have is as to wether it can export to AIR. I know it makes flash, but can it make AIR? I'd be curious to see.

Just a thought.

iPhone OS 3.0

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
Ya know what's dumb? iPhone OS 3.0. I was, as a developer, trying to get my SDK for it. But no, I have to pay eighty bucks to get the SDK. That's dumb, if you ask me.
What's dumber is that I can't even develop in Mac OS Tiger, so I now have to go and upgrade to Leopard just to make an app.

Again, utter stupidity.
Well, this upcoming sunday is Maine maple sunday. So, if you find yourself in maine, come to any saphouse and get yourself some free samples of Maple Syrup.

Here's a video my friend made. It's pretty stupidly funny.

Catalyst, to the Future and Beyond

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I think that catalyst is a great tool. However, to be smarter, they could impliment it a different way.

I think that they should take the tools from catalyst and insert them into ALL of the design applications; Photoshop, InDesign, etc. That way, it would save the extra step of importing to catalyst then exporting it again. It could be done in one step from one application.

Another idea that I had is that they could merge Flash and Flash Catalyst. This would make alot of sense, because flash already has some of these tools. They could do the same thing with Catalyst and Flex Builder.

Just a thought.

Adobe, hear our words...

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I'd like to see what everyone would like to see in the next releases of popular Creative Suite products. So, i'd like to start a discussion on my blog along with one on my Twitter page to compile everyone's ideas. When a god list has been made, I'll send the feature request to my contact at Adobe, and see what we get out of it.

Flash Catalyst vs Produle

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Well... I've delved as deep as Adobe allows into the realm of Flash Catalyst. I've found out a lot, and are waiting for a Public Beta.

With it, I will be able to make my dreams come true. I'm not good at designing and styling in Flex, but excellent in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I can create anything in that, so I can turn anything into Flash. Produle doesn't allow you to do this, You can't draw on an image and make it a button, Like catalyst. It was presented to me as being able to do this, but they lied to me. It can't. But t can do some other things, which makes it still kinda useful if you can't afford Catalyst.

Catalyst allows you to add states to applications, which I very hard in Produle. the Catalyst interface is simple, the Produle interface only is really useful if you have a big screen. Otherwise, it doesn't fit and you can't see some things.

I have to say, I'll stick to Flash Catalyst all the way.

Twitter

I have just started to use twitter. This feed will NOT always help developers, so James, if your out there, I really don't appreciate any "How does this help developers? Nothing...." comments.

Not to sound rude, but I really don't appreciate it. So please, don't.

Where am I now?

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Well, I am currently at the Gorham Pack 85 pinewood derby, helping out with the official business. Right now, I am working on my CommuniPix Desktop app. I just want your feedback as to what you want to see in the desktop app. Check out the site and tell me what you want. I'll let you know if your feature request made it in.

Leave a comment to have your say!

Creative Suite Hardware Tools: NuLOOQ Navigator

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I have been using the NuLOOQ navigator with creative suite for years. I have found it ti be a really useful tool for designing and developing. You can assign different functions to the buttons on the top of the ring. Also, you can use the ring surrounding the dial for page navigation. The top ring also can be used, as I do, for zooming in and out of a page. there are several different toolsets for different applications that you can download that give it different functions.

Sadly, the NuLOOQ is no longer supported. Logitech, however, does make some newer models that you could look at. I plan to get a new one in the near future, but I will be sad to get rid of my NuLOOQ.

Flash CS4 Quizzes

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
Sorry for the entry below this one that doesn't exist. It submitted the entry before I had typed anything in it.

One thing that I think is annoying in flash CS4 is that there are no more Quiz templates. Before, I could make a quiz and post it to my connect room. Now, I can't, since there are no quizzes in Flash anymore. I can make them in Presenter, but that means I need windows, which I don't have. I don't know if it's possible to get these templates for CS4, but I'll look and post them if I find them.

Produle: First Impressions

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks
I was introduced to Produle this morning, by Produle

I mostly have been playing with the layout and components. The one that I have tried the most is the Google Tracker. It can link to a Google Analytics account and add tracking to your app (I think). I'm not sure exactly what it has the capability to do, as I have only hust scratched the surface of it.

I think that they are trying to make the layout easier to use, but I have found it to be harder that Flex or Flash. Everything is crammed in on the screen, which is kind of annoying.

I can do things with xml data services, but I haven't tried that yet.

For those hard coders, there is no code view that I can find. This is annoying to me, though I get over it.

It is completely unlike Flex Builder.

Produle does have some standard Flex/Flash components, like the DataGrid and the Panel, but it also has some unique components that I have yet to explore.

As I delve deeper into Produle, I'll keep you posted on what I find.

Rotating a SWF in a Flex Application..

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Let's just say that this is a nightmare. An absolute nightmare. You would think that you just drag the rotation handle around to rotate it to what you want. This actually doesn't work. It creates a ScrollBar on the bottom of the screen so that you can scroll to the actual location of the SWF. So, to eliminate this, you have to change the rotation center of the SWF, and the scroll bar will be gone when you rotate it.

Maybe I'm just a klutz and there is an easier way. Maybe not. I don't know.
My problem came when I tried to make this calendar and the InDesign generated SWF wouldn't rotate properly. It does now, but it didn't at one point.

Dreamweaver Developer Toolbox CS4

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks
When I got the CS4 update to the Developer Toolbox, I really had a lot of trouble. It crashes frequently, and freezes up more so. At first, it wouldn't connect to a database. Then, it wouldn't let me clear the Developer Toolbox Cache. The preferences got messed up, and that presented some problems.

One good thing that I can think of is the fact that the multiple file upolader now works on Macintosh, where it only worked on windows before.

When you create something with it the first time, it will have to push up a bunch of new includes. It may take some time, but it will resolve some issues that the CS3 one had.

They are completely cross-compatible, so you should have no issues with old files.

Congrads, you blog has given birth to triplicates...

Sorry about the triple posts under this one, those of you who use feeds.

I was having some trouble with my blog, and it pinged Feeds 3 times.

Again, sorry.

PDF in Flex 3

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I found this today while developing my CommuniPix Desktop App. If any of you use CommuniPix, let me know what you want to see in the desktop app, besides the standard features. I need this to display a piece of it that is online and I would like to display it in the application. I am developing it in AIR, and plan to also make a Flex port of it for the website.

This is the Adobe Help Center tutorial on displaying a PDF in Flex.

Flash Catalyst

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks
I took a look at Flash Catalyst this morning. It's pretty interesting. That really is the bridge between PS and AI and FW to Flex. Before, there really wasn't one. But still, will it be out in time to be part of CS4? Who knows.

If any of you got a MAX preview, leave some comments to let everyone know about it.

Acrobat Features

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks
the feature in Acrobat that allows you to create a PDF from a web site is great. I sucked down the Flex 3 Help site with it, and use the file instead of the site. The only thing is this. To use it, you need a ton of hard drive space, and a fast connection to the internet. Otherwise, it takes FOREVER to download the site, and uses all of your processor space. So, only do it if you have the time.

Should Adobe bypass Flex 4?

| 6 Comments | No TrackBacks
So, I've given it alot of thought, and I really do believe that Adobe should bypass Flex 4. I know it's been previewed at MAX and stuff, but it really needs to go. By the looks of the timeline, it won't come out until long After the next release of Creative Suite. So, that would make it two versions behind. The Flex 3 came out as a CS3 product and Flex 4 will be CS5? I don't know. IT really has to go.
