Eight Years of the iPod

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
This week in 2001, apple rolled out the first of the iPods. These powerful machines held a massive 5 Gigabytes, Count 'em! 5 Whopping Gigabytes! they ran on a massive hard drive, and had a short battery life. But hey! they played over 1000 songs! And, best of all, it kept them all organized with this nifty little application called iTunes!

Okay, I'll admit it, the first generation iPods were pretty lame. However, they did have several things that most other music players had. They had a hard drive, for one. This was huge, considering that it was probably the highest capacity hard drive of it's size at the time. It also did have a media managing app that did all of the managing for you. No other player had the sync capabilities that the iPod did (correct me if I'm wrong). it also had a spinning wheel for selections through menus, which I know that no-one else had. However, it did have one minor glitch. The hard drive seemed to give out on mine right after the warranty expired. Apple would be happy to fix it for a fine $200. I did not fix it, and so as forever doomed to experience the famous iPod "Hard drive click of Death!".

As far as technology goes, this platform is still supported. Apple is still selling refurbished ones on the Apple store, and it will still sync with the current version of iTunes. However, I would much rather have a new nano with a cideo camera or iPod touch with speakers and a tilt sensor. Wouldn't you?

All for now!

Acrobat Forms to the Rescue!

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

So, here was my problem. I was in school, and had to come up with a good way to take Two Column notes and somehow stay organized. In my yearly pledge to use next to no paper for creating documents, I turned to the digital world. I created a template for notes in InDesign, and saved it as a PDF. Thanks to OCR and Acrobat 9, I had myself a neat little form. However, creating a new file for notes every night seemed unweiledy, and I needed a way to keep it all organized. What was I to do?

Well, Acrobat came to the rescue! Once I had a form made up, I set up a form review cycle through Acrobat.com so that I could keep all of my responses in one file. I can reset the form, and only have to keep track of 3 files for my entire months worth of notes, each with it's own data. Gotta love Acrobat!

Swap a Macbook's glossy Display for Matte

Quoted from http://www.tuaw.com/2009/10/12/swap-a-macbooks-glossy-display-for-matte/:

Users have a love/hate relationship with Apple's glossy displays. Namely, they either love them or they hate them. I haven't used one myself, as I'll be hanging on to my original MacBook Pro until it ceases to work.

Until now, shoppers could get either a glossy or matte display with the 15" MacBook Pro, but not the 13" model. TechRestore has stepped in to do the "repair." For $200, they'll remove your 13" MacBook or MacBook Pro's glossy display and slap a matte screen in its place. The work comes with a 1-year warranty and TechRestore says they'll have your precious back to you within 24 hours of receipt. Note that this requires a trade-in of our existing screen; you won't get it back.

If you have this service done, please let us know how it goes. Enjoy your glare-free computing!

For comparison, RadTech sells an anti-glare film that can be applied over a glossy display. They're available for the 13in MacBook/Pro (unibody), the 15in MacBook Pro (unibody), the 17in MacBook Pro (unibody) and various iMacs. You can get the full list here. The films start at $19.95US each.

EventBox: Everything Client for the Power Everythinger

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

For a while, I have been searching for a good desktop application to do everything that I do on the web. Well, after several weeks of searching, I finally found a solution to my dilemma.

The solution for the short term appears to be EventBox. It really does do everything. It does Flickr uploading, Twitter, Google Reader, RSS Feeds, Digg, Reddit, OneRiot, Identica, and Facebook. Really, this thing does everything. It takes everything that comes in from any of these services and puts it into one convenient unread inbox. Pretty Convenient, Eh?

Each of these services has a different display style, making them easily discernible from each other in the inbox.

The Digg service displays the Digg topic in the box, and the number of diggs at the side. It also allows you to repost the topics via twitter or Identi.ca.

The Flickr service displays the image in a small box to the left and the image information to the right. It also allows you to see the image in a popout window at full size.

The Google Reader service syncs all of your feeds from Google Reader right into eventbox. That way, you get all of your news right in your one handy inbox. You can also repost these news items through Twitter.

The real reason I use this application is because of the Twitter feature. It collects all of your tweets, and puts them into an easy to navigate interface. You can retweet, and it automatically applies the appropriate reply tags when you select a tweet, as if you were to reply to it. The tweet input field is at the very bottom of the window, and is hideable.

All in all, EventBox is a pretty slick client for the power everythinger. Get it for yourself!

All for now!

Microsoft/Danger FAIL!

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

From Techcrunch.com:

Wow. T-Mobile and Danger, the Microsoft-owned subsidiary that makes the Sidekick, has just announced that they’ve likely lost all user data that was being stored on Microsoft’s servers due to a server failure. That means that any contacts, photos, calendars, or to-do lists that haven’t been locally backed up are gone. Apparently if you don’t turn off your Sidekick and make sure its battery doesn’t run out you can salvage what’s currently stored on the device, otherwise you’re out of luck: Microsoft/Danger is describing the likelihood of recovering the data from their servers as “extremely low”.

T-Mobile Sidekick users have been suffering from a major outage all week, and that issue apparently hasn’t been resolved either.

This goes beyond FAIL, face-palm, or any of the other internet memes we’ve come to associate with incompetence. The fact that T-Mobile and/or Microsoft Danger don’t have a redundant backup is simply inexcusable, especially given the fact that the Sidekick is totally reliant on the cloud because it doesn’t store its data locally. Microsoft acquired Danger for $500 million in February 2008.

Update:: There is some speculation that this was not actually caused by a server meltdown, but by Danger’s failure to make a backup before a Storage Area Network upgrade that was botched.

The full letter to customers is below.

T-MOBILE AND MICROSOFT/DANGER STATUS UPDATE ON SIDEKICK DATA DISRUPTION

Dear valued T-Mobile Sidekick customers:

T-Mobile and the Sidekick data services provider, Danger, a subsidiary of Microsoft, are reaching out to express our apologies regarding the recent Sidekick data service disruption. We appreciate your patience as Microsoft/Danger continues to work on maintaining platform stability, and restoring all services for our Sidekick customers.

Regrettably, based on Microsoft/Danger’s latest recovery assessment of their systems, we must now inform you that personal information stored on your device – such as contacts, calendar entries, to-do lists or photos – that is no longer on your Sidekick almost certainly has been lost as a result of a server failure at Microsoft/Danger. That said, our teams continue to work around-the-clock in hopes of discovering some way to recover this information. However, the likelihood of a successful outcome is extremely low. As such, we wanted to share this news with you and offer some tips and suggestions to help you rebuild your personal content. You can find these tips at the T-Mobile Sidekick Forums (http://www.t-mobile.com/sidekick ). We encourage you to visit the Forums on a regular basis to access the latest updates as well as FAQs regarding this service disruption.

In addition, we plan to communicate with you on Monday (Oct. 12) the status of the remaining issues caused by the service disruption, including the data recovery efforts and the Download Catalog restoration which we are continuing to resolve. We also will communicate any additional tips or suggestions that may help in restoring your content.

We recognize the magnitude of this inconvenience. Our primary efforts have been focused on restoring our customers’ personal content. We also are considering additional measures for those of you who have lost your content to help reinforce how valuable you are as a T-Mobile customer.

We continue to advise customers to NOT reset their device by removing the battery or letting their battery drain completely, as any personal content that currently resides on your device will be lost.

Once again, T-Mobile and Microsoft/Danger regret any and all inconvenience this matter has caused.

From my mind:

Well, once again, Microsoft has found a way to insert bugs and problems into perfectly functional systems. I don't know how they do it, but they seem to be pretty good at it.

Good job, guys. Good job.

In The Market for a MySQL Tool

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
So here's my problem. In my frenzy to be current, I upgraded to Snow Leopard. This shouldn't be a problem, right? Well, for a while when our server wasn't working, it was no problem to me. However, once the server was fixed, I could then connect to MySQL again. This made me fire up my favorite tool, YourSQL. Unfortunately, YourSQL is not fully compatible with 10.6, so this leads me to my problem. I need a new tool for editing MySQL. If anyone has any suggestions, I will review them all on my blog and pick the best one for a complete review and expose. So, let the comments come in, and I'll pick the best of the best!

Eolas Vs. World

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

From www.macrumors.com:

CNET reports that Apple, Google, and twenty other companies have been sued by Eolas Technologies for patent infringement related to the use of browser plug-ins and Ajax to offer interactive content in Web browsers. The move comes several years after the conclusion of a similar lawsuit brought against Microsoft that resulted in an initial $521 million judgment in favor of Eolas, although the suit was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.
Eolas' suit is not to be taken lightly. Although the earlier Microsoft case took many years to resolve, and Eolas by no means won a complete victory, the patent involved did overall withstand heavy legal challenges despite many on the Web rallying to Microsoft's aid. Microsoft and Eolas won't describe terms of their 2007 settlement of the patent case, but Eolas did say it expected to pay its shareholders a 2007 dividend afterward.

The Microsoft suit, as well as the new one targeting Apple and others, focused on a patent held by Eolas stemming from work performed by Eolas founder Michael Doyle while at the University of California, San Francisco. The patent, which covers the use of such technologies as Flash and Java plug-ins, was the subject of intense scrutiny during the trial and was initially overturned by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office before being reinstated and serving as the basis of the judgment against Microsoft.

The new suit also includes the use of Ajax Web development techniques for which Eolas has recently received a second patent as an extension of the original. Defendants in the new suit include Adobe, Amazon, Apple, Blockbuster, Citigroup, eBay, Frito-Lay, Go Daddy, Google, J.C. Penney, JPMorgan Chase, Office Depot, Perot Systems, Playboy Enterprises, Staples, Sun Microsystems, Texas Instruments, Yahoo, and YouTube.

From my mind:

As far as I can tell, Adobe and Apple probably won't pay them for this, and the suit will just die out over the course of years. As far as Google goes, they might pay up, because they have enough money in the bank.

I heard about this patent a few months ago and quickly dismissed it as uninforcable. However, it is clearly attempting to be enforced, and we'll just have to see what happens later on.

Seriously, how do they expect to shut down all of Flash and all RIAs?

Tiger 10.4.11 Server Freezes

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Well, over the past few weeks, we have been having some interesting adventures with our XServe. First, the upgrade to leopard, the downgrade to tiger, the fix for Perl. Then the hack, and fix. However, in the middle of all this, our server (Mac OSX Server, Ver. 10.4.11) started to freeze.

What is happening is that when you open an application, then it takes forever for the application to open. There is no CPU activity, and it seems like the server is just waiting for something. I can't tell what it's doing, but it seems like it's just waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting...

As far as background processes go, everything works fine. The web works, FTP and all other services work, just the UI freezes. Apparent Fix: Restart Finder. It has been running fine all day since we restarted Finder.

Battle of the Screen Recording Tools

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

So here's your situation:You are working on some video tutorials and find yourself in need of a decent Screen Recording tool. Well, in this post, I'll review 3, and give you a good idea of which one to use.

QuickTime Player X

Price: $29 with Snow Leopard

Almost hidden in the new version of Mac OSX is the function for the new version of the QuickTime player to do Screen recordings. It records the screen videos at full resolution, and can save into almost all fo the QuickTime formats. Pros: Comes with Mac OSX, many exporting formats. Cons: Does not record system or microphone sound.

Jing

Price: Free

Jing is an okay screen recording tool. It, like QuickTime player, does not record sound or system sounds. It does upload your videos to it's website. Pros: Free. Cons: Only saves files as SWFs, leaves it's recording window open in your recordings.

  Snapz Pro X

Price: $69 from Ambrosia Software

Snapz Pro is one of the best tools for Screen Recording that I have used in a very long while. It does everything from screenshots to recordings, and it takes in the system and microphone sound. It encodes all of it's videos to QuickTime .mov files. It has teh capability to only take a video of a selection of the screen, rather than the whole thing. This is the best one that I have used out of all of the ones that I have reviewed.

Some of you may be saying, "What about ScreenFlow?" Well, ScreenFlow is good to, however I made an investment in Snapz Pro, and didn't want to spend the $100 on a screen flow license. If anyone would like to contribute a review of ScreenFlow, I'd gladly post it and give you all the internet cookies you can handle.

Wikipedia Quietly Edits their Editing Policy

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

In august, the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia changed its editing policy. This new policy change concerns mostly biography pages on the site. Under the new policy, anonymous users will be able to edit these biography pages. However, these changes will not be visible to the general public until experts who were Wikipedia employees approved them. This change is supposed to make the site a more reliable source of information. People such as Jimmy Wales say that this change is itself an error. He says that the site will instead adopt a flagged protection protocol for a small number of pages. This plan is still under development, and will not go through as much of a change as previously thought.

For a while, such controls have been on pages such as Barrack Obama, George Bush, and other famous celebrity. Anonymous users cannot edit these pages. The flagged protection will likely only apply to these pages. Most of the biography pages would be still open to editing by anonymous users. Unser the new rules, the site will likely become more open, allowing people to actually edit pages of celebrities, instead of never having their changes approved.

Policies in the Wikipedia foundation are made by a group of volunteers who may not be apparent to the foundation that actually make the site go. Jay Walsh, a spokesman for the nonprofit said that this was the first that he’s heard about the new policies. This policy is still in the dark for the most part, however, as with Wikipedia, the truth comes out.

Appeared on CNN.com/TECH this week.
